Business and Art

The demand for good affordable art has been spearheaded by an interest from emerging economies. An increasing number of private individuals have been teaming up with 'ART" experts to get advise on the up and coming, emerging artists. Some financial advisers and institutions are encouraging clients to include art in their portfolios. Not only has this created a market for new artists but established, lesser known creators (that have been flying below the radar) are now begining to ride on the crest of the wave.

Now might be the time to invest in Art related Business (?)

Guy the Gorilla (May 30, 1946 – 1978) was a Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) which was London Zoo‘s famous resident, something of a celebrity in the 1960s–70s and was often profiled on kids TV shows and natural history productions. Guy the Gorilla was one of London Zoo’s best-loved animals.

He arrived at the zoo on 5 November 1947, Guy Fawkes Night, hence his name. He was a tiny baby, weighing just 23 lb (10 kg) and holding a small tin hot-water bottle.

What's it really like living with creativity? Look back over the years at the tortured artists, drunken writers and drug-crazed musicians who litter our heritage and you might start to ask the question: is creativity a blessing or a curse? How do people hell-bent on finding their muse cope? Is it the quest for creative fulfillment that causes mental anguish, or is there an imbalance in the first place? Can a creative person ever be truly happy as they constantly strive for perfection in their chosen art? And what is it like living with these two-headed beasts – can they be tamed, or should they be allowed free rein?

Sex in advertising ?:

Over the past few decades, the use of increasingly explicit sexual imagery in consumer-oriented print, TV and Internet advertising has become almost commonplace. This is not a new phenomenon, the female form has been used to sell products and services ever since man invented 'the market place'. Sexuality is considered one of the most powerful tools of marketing and particularly advertising.

SEO is Search Engine Optimisation – The way to get your company into search engines, using keywords and phrases in the text and titles of your webpages.

Creating good solid business keywords is not a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. Juxtaposing words together is a bit like creating a collage, the mind always tries to create a narrative when confronted with the written word. The juxtaposition of arbitrary phrases etc. will always tease and trick the mind into rationalizing what it is in front of it and attempt to make physical and world references – in other words try to make sense of what it is trying to analyze. These are the same processes that are used in understanding art Continue reading ?

Notes on Painting:

Rediscovering the printing process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process – disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in colour (earthy colours are very plastic like) and modern waterbased inks don’t become part of the surface, they sit on it, which is incredibly frustrating – the reason I took up printing in the first place was because of the absorbed flatness of the pigments.

Green blog - save the quail.

Quail
We can build you a green blog on one of our green servers. A blog can be private, as in most cases, or it can be for business purposes. A blog can be used internally within a company to enhance the communication and culture in a corporation or used externally for marketing, branding or public relations purposes. One of our favorite tools is WordPress. This free blogging tool is as an easy and extremely effective way of enhancing your web presence and business. To maintain a successful blog it is important to know your subject and to constantly expand your own personal knowledge. A blog is another marketing strategy used for increasing a site’s relevance, by second guessing what people search for when using a search engine. It is important to write your posts using ‘good’ keywords.

First in Google?: Allergy

Sex Allergy: "Over the past few decades, the use of increasingly explicit sexual imagery in consumer-oriented print, TV and Internet advertising has become almost commonplace. This is not a new phenomenon, the female form has been used to sell products and services ever since man invented 'the market place'. Sexuality is considered one of the most powerful tools of marketing and particularly advertising. Post-advertising sales response studies have shown it can be very effective for attracting immediate interest but are we becoming immune to sexy ads and are these adverts becoming impotent?"

#Business - where to begin?

Screenprint - 2011
Where to begin?:

Placing your idea or product on the Internet involves several complicated, interwoven elements, each one is dependent and relies on another. This 'spaghetti', which can be an utter tangled mess, is vital for online success. You need a strategy that can combine the skills of the participants (key company members) which can deliver your final product, convey your style, in an easily digestible manner - your clients need to be able to access and purchase your products with ease. This structure has to be created using a system that both creators and users can understand.

Old Tech - Tascam 144 image

First in Google?:

The good old days - Tascam 144 by This Window
‘Like A Sickle Runs Through Corn’ was recorded on a 4 track Tascam 144 cassette recorder – I had bought this in Birmingham – the store fleeced me with excessive repayments – they were expensive bits of kit and a … Continue reading →

  • Yep, two tascams, mine and yours. We both saw the Tomorrow's World when they appeared and instantly wanted one - took some time I seem to remember. I don't think though you bounced down to each other - I was sure you had a reel to reel but if not it does explain how it was recorded.”
Nicola was new to me, we had only met a handful of times so everything was polite courteous. She was ‘mike shy’ and it was difficult to get her to sing with any power. I can remember it being a deliberate process – the recording was organized and structured.

There are five recorded parts to the track: Drum Machine, Guitar, Vocals, Roland JP4 percussion track (drum sound) and an Elka string machine/ JP4 synth voice part. The master tape has been lost but I think I bounced the JP4 percussion track and the string/voice keyboard track together (internally). There is a point on the tape where I had to drop edit the string/voice track – it involved remarkable timing by you and a swift left index finger by me. You can here this where the flanger’s tonal sweep changes towards the later end of the track – this edit actually emphasized the elation of the keyboards, a lucky accident and I can remember us all jumping up and down with relief – it was a shit or bust moment. Paul Gauguin

Gauguin, Bernard, Cage, Richter:

There were many artists who were trying to claim freedom from nature, to allow themselves the pleasures of more self expression but who were held back by the simple fact that man himself was tied down with his links to nature. A break from naturalism was not to materialize until some twenty years later with the birth pangs of abstract art. The steps these artists of the 1880′s were looking for was a break from observed representation. Paris was a hotbed of ideas within the young educated (or being educated) middle class. Symbolism and its search for new the boundaries of creativity within literature and poetry began to point the way for these young men, their almost post modernist approach to their art looked to steal ideas from every form of intellectual discipline. These painters were a clique and were accused by their contemporaries of being too intellectual to be serious painters. Gauguin meet one of these young mavericks (Emile Bernard) in his Pont Aven period and embraced the younger mans theories.

Time for Bed maybe?

Time for 'Bed: "Juxtaposing images, either as a collage or printing is not simply a decorative process it is a complicated exercise.

'Bed' (1955) by Robert Rauschenberg

The surreal aspect of abstract art has been (in many cases) ignored. Artists like Rauschenberg and Richard Hamilton have exploited the absurdities of Marcel Duchamp and created something new - a combination of artistic and painterly ideas that has a foot in every camp.

Capitalizing on the visual freedom of expression that the Abstract Expressionists gave artists, Rauschenberg incorporated their processes of mark making into his vision of (Pop) Art. The meshing together of gestural marks and the printed image or 'objets trouvé' further complicated the visual dialogue - by laying over a print or combining an object somehow makes the process of untangling the visual image simpler."

Old painting 1980 by This Window

The constant questioning and declassification of what art is and what the content of art was, lead to a crisis in painting (there as always been a crisis in painting) – Painting is dead – the exponents of Conceptual Art tried to destroy the art object but failed – thought and the idea is the object. The primary aims of Conceptual Art in the 1960′s was to carry out a theoretical examination of ‘art’ and through understanding propose ‘concepts as art’. Two and three-dimensional art was in the doldrums, the essence of creating was the new Holy Grail.

Duchamp: I would have wanted to work, but deep down I’m enormously lazy. I like living, breathing, better than working. I don’t think that the work I’ve done can have any social importance whatsoever in the future. Therefore if you wish, my art would be that of living: each second, each breath is a work which is inscribed nowhere, which is neither visual nor cerebral. It is a sort of constant euphoria.

The painting?

This Window - The painting Age?:

Whatever happened to the Space Age? by This Window

The definition of what is art and what isn't has become wooly. Painting is often defined as the application of a medium applied to a surface with a brush but in reality painting can involve other practices like printing. There are generally unspoken guidelines for what makes a good painting. These intuitive components determine the painting's aesthetic value. These values and sensibilities constantly go through a shift, depending on cultural, political and social tolerances. There is no longer one definition for what makes a successful painting.

Editing images for exhibition?:

I have just been rummaging through old boxes of stuff and found the picture above – yellowed and faded – it still makes my heart flutter. I wish I’d been to the moon.

Woodcuts

The most inspirational woodcuts (for me) are by Émile Bernard. Émile Henri Bernard (April 28, 1868 – April 16, 1941) is known as a Post-Impressionist painter who had artistic friendships with Van Gogh, Gauguin, Eugene Boch and Cézanne. Most of his notable work was accomplished at a young age, in the years 1886 through 1897. He is also associated with Cloisonnism and Synthetism, two late 19th century art movements. Less known is Bernard’s literary work, comprising plays, poetry, and art criticism as well as art historical statements that contain first hand information on the crucial period of modern art to which Bernard had contributed. Bernard was in many ways, the young, educated and intellectual mentor, who was crucial in intellectualizing and inspiring Paul Gauguin during the Pont Aven period of his career. Read more…

North Devon Arts

Supporting North Devon Arts: " The aim of the The Gallery exhibition, which runs during the West Buckland Festival, is promote selected, amateur and professional artist living within the dispersed communities of North Devon and beyond. Past exhibitions have received critical acclaim and have been remarkably successful for artists and visitors. Diversity has been the success of these exhibitions, with entries ranging from textiles, painting, carving, printmaking and ceramics etc.."

Whatever happened to the Space Age?

I am slowly getting the list together of artist who will be invited to exhibit at the West Buckland Festival in September 2011. Being the 'Festival Director of Art' means that ultimately I will offend someone when I don't select them - who needs to be popular?
