His career has been defined by versatility and innovation, his work covers virtually every painterly discipline and art methodology; his work can be figurative, abstract and even conceptual. Richter once declared that: “I use different styles like clothes: it’s a way to disguise myself.”

I think an Art Exhibition is the business of the day...

Examples of his work include, 4900 Colours from 2007, which consisted of bright squares that are randomly arranged in a grid pattern to create a kaleidoscopic of colour. It was created around the same time he designed the south transept window of Cologne Cathedral.

Since the 1960s, Gerhard Richter has immersed himself in a rich and varied exploration of painting.

Eurozone turns off business

The message the Eurozone are giving the rest of the world is one of':

We don't know what we are doing!

In Europe there seems to be this constant reliance on "short-term" measures. The inability of Germany and France to actually make a definitive decision, to resolve our inertia, continues to have lasting repercussions on European (small) businesses. Yet more talks are to be embarked on this week... What is their problem?

Surveying Exeter for a move

Exeter has been identified as one of the top ten most profitable locations for a business to be based. The city has good transport links, with Exeter St David's railway station, Exeter Central railway station, the M5 motorway and Exeter International Airport connecting the city both nationally and internationally. Although a popular tourist destination, the city is not dependent on  tourism for its survival and commerce

I studied fine Art at Exeter College of Art and Design and was thinking about moving back there so I thought I would get a survey done on a property and I discovered these chaps.

Exeter Surveyors

They are a practice of chartered surveyors covering Exeter, Exminster, Topsham and the surrounding area, They do all sorts of professional work including building surveys, structural surveys, homebuyer reports and property valuations. You can contact them here: 01392 919 012.
Exeter is the county town of Devon and home of a magnificent Cathedral. Exeter Synagogue is the third oldest Synagogue in Britain, completed in 1763. The ruins of Rougemont Castle is in Exeter, where the last person in England executed of witchcraft was imprisoned. Exeter University is ranked in the top 200 universities in the world for its academic achievements. Unfortunatly my Art college no longer exists but I am grateful for the education I got there.

Exeter was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in the Second World War, when a total of 18 raids between 1940 and 1942 flattened much of the city centre. In 1942, as part of the Baedeker Blitz and specifically in response to the RAF bombing of Lübeck, vast areas of the city, were levelled by incendiary bombing. Many historic buildings were destroyed, and others, including the grand Cathedral of St Peter in the heart of the city, were damaged.

Napalm Exmoor

Fish can kill me.
When I was very small (maybe 3 or 4 years old) my grandfather, who lost the sight of one eye from a bullet fired by a German sniper (fortunately not a very good one) during the Battle of the Somme in World War 1, wiped my face with the corner of his apron, an apron he had used to wipe his filleting knife on. He was a grocery shopkeeper who specialized in wet fish.

I can remember the instantaneous pain and swelling in my eyes, the panic-driven breathlessness, the weeping blindness.

WordPress #Bridgend services

This Window by This Window

We love using WordPress!

WordPress is in principle a blogging tool but, with the new updates, can be used to create a dynamic business website. It does require a bit of technical knowledge to set up, like creating and linking to a MySQL database – but we can help you.

MySQL is a database that is frequently used for Web applications. It's fast and reliable and can store large quantities of data; several high-traffic Web sites use MySQL for data storage, including Google, Flickr, Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia. When you install an application, such as WordPress, you need a MySQL database.

North Devon Web can help you with setting up a small business website powered by WordPress. North Devon Web belongs to a network of websites that host in a green way.  North Devon Web is helping to prevent the release of 2,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year by hosting on ‘Green Servers' – as a result,  the network's energy efficiency is equivalent to planting approximately 2,390 acres of trees, not driving 6.1 million miles, or removing 510 cars from the road. We are here to help you stay in business .

We can write great content for your website and be green about it...

WE can guide you through the conception, birth pangs and sustainability of your web presence, we can create content for your website that can help you sell your products or services, we can optimize your site for search engines and submit them to the major players. We use a combination of automated and human processes to help you towards achieving world domination.

Our other services:

  • We will update your website from £1.00 a page.
  • We can host your site with a webpage from £30.00 per year. (This does not include buying the domain – but we can organise this for you.)
  • Our services include free optimisation and submission to search engines including Google for our hosted clients.
  • We can build you a Google friendly sitemap and submit it to them for £2.50.
  • We can even make it ‘fancy’ if you like.

A blog is another marketing strategy used for increasing a site’s relevance, by second guessing what people search for when using a search engine. It is important to write your posts using ‘good’ keywords.

Screen print on paper

Screen printed image - for an exhibition in 2012.

Whatever Happened to the Space Age

Original painting by Peter Bright (aka This Window).
Media: Painting and Screen Print on canvas, signed and dated 2011.
Size: 500mm x 400mm
ARTIST + S T A T E M E N T …
As an 11 year old I watched the first moon landing in 1969. I was mad about everything to do with space travel, I would read anything that was about rockets, cosmonauts and astronauts. Later in my life I shook the hand of a man who shook the hand of my all time hero Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, that was for me like touching history, if only secondhand (excuse the pun).

Nancy Spungen left home at age 17 and moved to New York City. She worked as a stripper around Times Square (and allegedly at a brothel as well). She followed bands such as Aerosmith, The New York Dolls and The Ramones. In 1977, she moved to London and met The Sex Pistols. When lead singer Johnny Rotten did not show interest in her, she pursued bassist Sid Vicious and they soon moved in together.

Business Articles

Articles worth looking at:
  1. I Would Rather Have A Tooth Removed Without Pain Relief!
"Come and visit my new website" - No thanks!
This constant bombardment of self promotion from twitter, facebook etc. is driving me nuts. The Internet is a more sophisticated tool than this. It is a travesty to allow it to become a vehicle for pure unadulterated, egotistical spam.
    in Small Business
  2. Owning A Small Business Has Become A Nightmare
Is it time to throw in the towel or roll the dice?
Horoscopes in newspapers are based on star signs and birth dates; these predict the day’s events. These predictions are based on the laws of probability and chance. You could read your daily horoscope and make the prediction into a self-fulfilling prophecy, you could go out and find that ‘Tall dark handsome man’ or go on ‘A long journey’.

Notes:

  • Fingerprints on white borders – nightmare on a short print run. A fingerprint is an impression left by the friction ridges of a human finger = fingerprints are the traces of an impression from the friction ridges of any part of a human hand. Impressions of fingerprints may be left behind on a surface by the natural secretions of sweat from the eccrine glands that are present in friction ridge skin, or they may be made by ink or other substances transferred from the peaks of friction ridges on the skin to a relatively smooth surface such as a fingerprint card. Fingerprints records normally contain impressions from the pad on the last joint of fingers and thumbs, although fingerprint cards also typically record portions of lower joint areas of the fingers.
  • Action PaintingPollock. Print dribbled paint.
  • Rediscovering the printing process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process – disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in colour (earthy colours are very plastic like) and modern waterbased inks don’t become part of the surface, they sit on it, which is incredibly frustrating – the reason I took up printing in the first place was because of the absorbed flatness of the pigments.

Ideas for business

I have always believed that there is a lot to learn from the history of art. Artists and their crazy approach to their artworks are sometimes similar to a maverick approach to business. But why is keeping things going always the problem? Why is sustainability so difficult?
hum_bug
Creating a new website or business is an exciting process but how long does it take before the enthusiasm wears off and the whole thing, the effort, the drive etc. becomes a chore. Sometimes it is a bit like being held to ransom by your own creation - it has become a monster, a mistress and a master. The whole thing implodes and (isolated) you feel the whole world is against you. Your business is running you, instead of you controlling your dreams.

It is all about survival and creating strategies that make things easier. History books are full of accounts of survival and victory over wars of attrition, apply the solution to your entrenchment. Take control and be the dictator of your own destiny. The alternative is to sink deeper into depression and become overwhelmed and worn down by the prospect of carrying on - to the point of collapse.

Small businesses need to increase their web presence effectively and cheaply. There are a lot of free, and exceptional efficient tools out there and some are more powerful (getting your products into search engines) than expensive branded software and tools. This little step will help you stay in business.

Here is another recycled postcard that was originally a promo for 'Cassette Culture'

A postcard or post card is a rectangular piece of thick paper or thin cardboard intended for writing and mailing without an envelope.
In some countries, it is possible to send them for a lower price than for a letter. Stamp collectors distinguish between postcards (which require a stamp) and postal cards (which have the postage pre-printed on them). While a postcard is usually printed by a private company, individual or organization, a postal card is issued by the relevant postal authority.

The United States Postal Service defines a postcard as: rectangular, at least 31?2 inches (88.9 mm) high × 5 inches (127 mm) long × 0.007 inches (0.178 mm) thick and no more than 41?4 inches (108 mm) high × 6 inches (152.4 mm) long × 0.016 inches (0.406 mm) thick.[2] However, some postcards have deviated from this (for example, shaped postcards).

The study and collecting of postcards is termed deltiology.

Art Exhibition?

I decided to have an impromptu exhibition - it is so impromptu the people who are coming to visit don't even know it is an exhibition.

As an artist (well sort of) it is easier to encourage people to look, touch even buy your works of art in a gallery. High Street shopping and gallery purchases are a sensual experience, so how does this work on the Internet?

We are all constantly searching for the next must have object - we read reviews, visit galleries, go shopping and are sometimes captured by cynical marketing. When friends, neighbors and family show off their latest lifestyle purchase, frantic impulse buying (online) begins - we want the lifestyle but we want it cheaper.

Green hosting in North Devon

North Devon Web belongs to a network of websites that host in a green way. North Devon Web is helping to prevent the release of 2,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year by hosting on ‘Green Servers’ – as a result, the network’s energy efficiency is equivalent to planting approximately 2,390 acres of trees, not driving 6.1 million miles, or removing 510 cars from the road.
The web hosting industry has a negative impact on the environment due to the energy hungry servers that are used to keep the Internet fueled. We can all try to limit the impact where possible and hosting on a green server is a step in the right direction. More and more people are buying from carbon ethical companies - tackling climate change is an important criteria.
The websites we host are powered by 100% wind energy.

The machines hosting our main site site and e-mail are fully eco-friendly! As energy awareness continues to grow, people are not just looking to make lifestyle adjustments, they want to make environmentally responsible decisions, power by renewable energy!

Bideford has two main local newspapers, both published weekly: the North Devon Gazette and the North Devon Journal. The Gazette was founded in Bideford, and was originally known as the Bideford Gazette. It is now a free newspaper, delivered to most local homes, and is now based in Barnstaple. A local newsletter, the 'Bideford Buzz,' is published monthly by a team of volunteers, this unfortunatley seems to be an inactive WordPress blog.
We are based in North Devon, (UK) – we provide a web site updating service. We will update your site, even if we didn’t design it in the first place. There is nothing worse than a web site that contains out of date information….this gives the buying public the wrong impression. Bideford is fortunate to have a fantastic Museum and Art Gallery located near the center and waterside of the town. The permanent collection contains nearly 350 pieces of mainly West Country slipware pottery and other ceramics. The majority are from the North Devon area.

WordPress for the iPhone

20111006-230103.jpgWell here we are and there is a great spread out in front of us - there is: roast chicken (my favorite) two iPhones, carrots and peas, a Samsung Galaxy, potatoes, gravy and an iPod Touch (not forgetting a bowl of salad). I have been looking forward to this all day. I only managed to grab a small sandwich for lunch while I slaving over my iMac.

The best thing about my iPhone is my WordPress app. The WordPress app allows you to update several blogs from one device, moderate comments, create or edit posts and pages and add images or videos more easily. The best feature is the ability to add a photo quickly to your posts. This was more difficult to do with the earlier versions of the app.

The word bug amused me + Art = Business

From thiswindow.org

I have decided to recycle some old preview invitations that I sent out for exhibitions over the years.

The ant and the word bug amused me.

The term mixed media has always made me want to reach for the puke bucket – I prefer the expression ‘Combine Painting’ or in this case ‘Combine Drawing’. I have always been a hoarder, newspaper clippings, postcards etc. It is only now that I have decided to recycle them. Juxtaposing images, either as a collage or printing is not simply a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. The mind always tries to create a narrative between images. The juxtaposition of arbitrary marks, color, photographs etc. will always tease and trick the mind into rationalizing what it is trying to process and attempt to make physical world references – in other words make sense of what it is trying to analyze.
